What is CBD and will it make me high?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of approximately 113 cannabinoids found in the Hemp plant that can be extracted from its flowers and leaves (Whilst we are on the topic, note that CBD oil is not the same as Hemp Seed Oil. Hemp Seed Oil is made from Hemp seeds, as its name suggests, and whilst therapeutic in itself, does not contain CBD).
Hemp and Marijuana are both varieties of the Cannabis sativa L. plant. Hemp products (high in CBD and low in THC) are known to alleviate pain and to help to sooth both external and internal aches and conditions, while Marijuana products (high in THC and low in CBD), whilst also very therapeutic, have a powerful psychotic effect on the mind.
Once the connection is made with Cannabis, one of the first questions most people ask is: Will it make me high? Unlike THC however, which is psychoactive, CBD will not make you high. Whilst some of you might lose interest at this point (:-)), for those of you who are still interested, below are some benefits of using CBD and how you can select the right product for your needs.
Some Benefits of CBD
Used regularly, CBD will leave you feeling calm and balanced, yet focused. It also helps to reduce and manage anxiety, inflammation and promotes healthier sleep cycles.

CBD, due to its anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxation properties, has been scientifically proven to help with epilepsy and multiple sclerosis. For example, the CBD drug, Epidiolex (GW Pharmaceuticals, Salisbury, UK), has been approved to treat patients from the age of two years old with Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, both rare forms of epilepsy that emerge during childhood and can be difficult to treat. In addition, Sativex (GW Pharmaceuticals, Salisbury, UK) which is derived from Cannabis cultivars containing both THC and CBD, has been approved for use in the UK and is used to treat pain symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis.
Some other conditions currently undergoing CBD clinical trials include:
- Anxiety & Depression
- Chronic pain
- Drug and alcohol addiction
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Menopausal symptoms
- Premenstrual symptoms
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Parkinson’s disease
- Weight disorders
How does CBD work?
Scientists believe that CBD works by interacting with our body´s own biological systems including the Endocannabinoid system; the system responsible for regulating our bodies’ most important functions, from anxiety, appetite, bowel movements, mood, sleep, pain and other functions. Your body naturally produces its own endocannabinoids to support this system. However, it may sometimes need extra support, especially in times of mental and physical stress.
Which Type of CBD should you go for?
Isolate, Broad or Full Spectrum?
Hemp extracts are often categorised according to the types of cannabinoids they contain:
CBD Isolate: As the name suggests, CBD Isolate, only contains CBD and none of the other cannabinoids found in the Hemp plant.
Broad Spectrum: This contains all cannabinoids in the Hemp plant except THC.
Full Spectrum: This refers to a diverse cannabinoid profile, which preserves all of the therapeutic cannabinoids found in the Hemp plant, including THC (under 0.2% which is the EU’s legal limit so not enough to get you “high”).
Cannabinoids like CBD, CBG and THC are known to be synergistic, meaning they rely on each other to work. For example, a study on cancer patients reported higher pain relief when THC was combined with CBD, as compared with using THC on its own.
Deciding whether to purchase an Isolate, Broad Spectrum or Full Spectrum tincture, very much depends on your needs. In general, we recommend using a Full Spectrum tincture for most ailments, particularly when used orally, in order to benefit from the full range of therapeutic cannibinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, which work synergistically together, as previously mentioned. Broad Spectrum might be best for those who are very sensitive to THC or are looking for a THC - free solution for use during the day (but might not help to lengthen sleeping cycles at night). Finally, Isolate is a viable option for topical use, such as bath bombs, where the product will be heavily diluted.
Which CBD Concentration is right for you?
There is no 'one-size-fits-all' when it comes to determining the right CBD dosage for each individual’s needs. Several factors play an important role here: your weight, metabolism, diet, symptom severity, method of delivery, as well as your Endocannabinoid system, which is as unique and individual as you are. Whilst most will very quickly get their dosage right with the help of our recommendations (which are based on our customers’ feedback – thank you), it might take a few trials before you find the right dosage for your purpose (commonly referred to as one's 'sweet spot').
Salunabis’ tinctures, which are all produced and tested in Switzerland, contain just two ingredients: pure organic Hemp extract and Hemp Seed Oil or MCT (coconut) oil.
Our Full Spectrum CBD tinctures (with the golden stripes) are available in 5%, 10% and 25% concentrations. We have formulated three CBD tincture strengths for you to choose from depending on your mental and physical health needs.
Our 5% Full Spectrum CBD Tincture is a good starting point for anyone new to CBD and for mild stress and anxiety. It is also the most versatile, so you can easily scale the dosage up or down to suit your needs.
The majority of our clients use our 10% Full Spectrum CBD Tincture to help them sleep through the night and for muscle recovery. And our 25% Full Spectrum CBD Tincture provides a natural, but effective alternative to stronger pain medication.
Our Broad Spectrum CBD tinctures (with the pink stripe) are only available in a 5% concentration and consist of organically grown Hemp extract and MCT oil (coconut oil), and are therefore milder in taste. We recommend these oils for those who might be particularly sensitive to THC, to reduce stress or anxiety levels during the day, rather than for night use.
